AUS PKER CHIP DETAIL

Print magazine design & production / Study Breaks May issue

Study Breaks May issue design and production provided us with several opportunities to try out some different graphic treatments and layouts in the feature section. Working with a story about perks that come with different employers, we came up with the concept of presenting the job perks as poker chips, and the jobs as playing cards – in a “play your cards right, this is what you’ll get” type theme. You can see the layout and a detail of the poker chips above.

OCP VERT AD

Collateral marketing design / Advertisement design / we make magazines

On occasion, we’ll be given the opportunity to place an ad in one of the publications we put together for a client. Advertisement design and collateral marketing design are part and parcel of what we do, but sometimes it can be more challenging to come up with a piece for our own business. Here is one of our solutions, an information graphic type ad, simplifying what we do down to the basics, and showing it in a way that’s easy to understand.

The design and production of Locale‘s digital magazine for May was made easier by stunning photography from Ryann Ford, featuring a beautiful, kid-friendly home in Minneapolis. Her work is always amazing, and technically perfect, but feels very natural and organic. And how she gets animals to sit still for more than 2 seconds is amazing – my dog would have chewed up those pillows and left the room long before a photo could be taken.

Here are the results of another quick project we worked on for Creative Action, a non-profit here in Austin – tee shirts for the kids attending their summer camp programs. This was a fun project, with a short, steep learning curve in spot color preparation for us.

COVER APR13 AUS

Print magazine design & production / Study Breaks April issue

Print magazine design & production is over for Study Breaks April issue, and it contained several examples of different treatments for lists in layout. Lists are incredibly popular devices in magazines – generally, covers that display a large number indicating a list of tips, advice, treatment, interviews… anything, will sell more easily than non-number covers. They’re often short, easy to read, frequently tongue in cheek, and so make the perfect piece that the potential buyer will turn to while in line at the checkout, and decide to throw it in their shopping cart rather than putting it back on the shelf.

These feature layouts deal with slightly longer, more involved lists than you’d put in the front of your book (though Study Breaks has regular list-based departments every issue in the first third of the book, which you can see samples of after the jump), but the basic premise is the same: make them fun and interesting to read.

The list format also allows for easy localization of content – Study Breaks is distributed at college campuses across the country, and contains content unique to the region at those campuses, as well as the non-specific layouts peppered throughout the magazine. LOCALE APRIL 2013 WEB-9
LOCALE APRIL 2013 WEB-11

Digital magazine design & production / LOCALE’s April issue

Locale‘s April issue included a feature on converting small spaces in your home into office/work spaces. This is an area I have an interest in, although I’m completely incapable of living with any permanent arrangement of furniture and will constantly move things around. But I digress. We experimented with layout and image treatment, this time going for a tumblr-like grid of images (also partially the inspiration for the look of our own site). See what I’m talking about by clicking here. This meant we needed a large collection of images gathered from creative commons sources.

Because Locale is a marketing piece at heart, we have to maintain the brand look and feel while providing our client with enough varied, high-end, exciting content to keep readers engaged. Luckily, we’re not being asked to explicitly sell a product, but to promote a concept; the joy and benefits of home ownership. I think this differentiates Locale from other similar products. Marketing material comes in all shapes and sizes of course, whether it’s a print ad like one of the many we’ve created for clients print magazines (click here to take a look), or an entire pull-out section (click here to see a pull-out SXSW map we worked on earlier this year).

Print magazine design & production – The Absolute Sound 232

Our latest print magazine design & production work on The Absolute Sound 232 resulted in some very minimal, effective feature and cover photography and layout. Joel Salcido shot this speaker for us, creating a simple corner set to place it in.

This issue also featured a special report from the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which required a custom layout. This was one of those times where we had to use photography supplied by the writers on scene, as opposed to professional photography. Though occasionally challenging, I think the report is given some credibility by the use of on-the-spot photos. As well as it’s own mini table of contents page, it was required to house fractional and full-page ads just like the rest of the magazine.

YAT 2013 LOGO

Collateral marketing design / Print / Logo design / Austin Texas event poster

A logo design, and collateral marketing design print piece – with fairly fast turnaround – were a couple of the items we produced this week. We’ve been working on a local non-profit’s marketing materials recently, and were asked to come up with a logo for their annual youth art event (find out more about them by clicking here). The logo will be used year to year, updating just the date info, and can be placed throughout related marketing materials as necessary. An important aspect of this logo design was to make sure we came up with something that had appeal to teens and preteens, specifically those involved, and in the local community. This is it’s first use in an actual piece of collateral, fingers crossed! You can see some of the other items we’ve created for this non-profit by clicking here. Take a look at the poster after the jump.

CE SI 29 FINAL REV-1

Digital magazine design & production / TAS Guide to High-performance Loudspeakers

We recently wrapped up design & production on the digital magazine sister of The Absolute Sound, focusing on high-performance loudspeakers. This particular type of digital magazine is one we’re particularly pleased with.

When we originally worked on the concept, we knew that there were several things we needed to achieve:

• Print ads from The Absolute Sound had to be used in the same relative fractional spaces in digital (for example, a half page horizontal print ad could be a half page horizontal digital ad).
• The fonts used had to be readable on screen, yet come from The Absolute Sound’s family of fonts.
• Knowing the body copy font would have to be larger than in print, we also knew that the page count per article would probably be approximately half again as long as in print, so to make the magazine easy to use despite it’s high page count, we need to include a functional navigation system that appears on each page.
• We needed a template that obviously originated with The Absolute Sound’s print template (for brand cohesion), but that was suited to reading onscreen, and easy to put together in production.
